On Feb. 21, as part of Black History Month, the staff and residents of Dismas Charities’ Savannah facility visited the First African Baptist Church, a fixture in the Underground Railroad. A secret tunnel is located beneath the church, which was used to transport runaway slaves to freedom. The church, which was built by slaves in the late 1700s, is the oldest African-American church in North America.
