St. Ann Substance Abuse Program residents (from left) Jamie Johnson, Austin Spenneberg, Donald Ely and Gregory Sumpter are hard at work planting corn in the facility’s Community Garden. The one acre garden is already showing the results of peas, carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes, cilantro, cucumbers and beans. The garden serves the facility and the surrounding neighborhoods of Algonquin and Park Hill, home to a large African immigrant population. The areas are considered “food deserts” with little access to healthy foods.
