Memorial Day
This year our nation will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 28. Many of us will use this opportunity to picnic, or enjoy the other opportunities that living in a free society provide us. But it is important to remember a group of people who, because they gave the ultimate sacrifice, allow us to enjoy the holiday. Memorial Day is a federal holiday designated for remembering those who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces. To put the importance of remembering them in perspective, consider that since the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) nearly 1.4 million United States military personnel have died in the services. Another 40,000 are still missing in action. Dismas Charities is extremely proud of our own veterans and is always mindful of the brave men and women who gave their all for us. On this special day there will be many volunteers, including several from Dismas, placing flags on graves in national cemeteries and elsewhere. We encourage everyone to pay special homage to our deceased saviors by visiting a cemetery or memorial to honor them, or simply in prayer before your picnic.
