Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, honors those who have died in the nation’s wars. It originated in the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle. Since 1868 Memorial Day has recognized those who worked to keep this country free by “decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country.” Dismas Charities, a vocal advocate for all veterans, will recognize the efforts of those who have passed from us with flowers and prayers. Memorial Day is celebrated this year on Monday, May 31, 2021.
