Kearny: Turning Pages and Spreading Smiles

Published: February 10, 2026 Updated: February 26, 2026

Last Spring during National Reading Month, a time dedicated to promoting literacy and fostering a love for reading, Dismas Charities Kearney (DCK) took to the classroom at a local Head Start Program. Their mission: to engage young children in the joy of storytelling and encourage a lifelong passion for reading.

The Head Start/Early Head Start Program, known for delivering high-quality services that support the healthy development of needy children, plays a crucial role in the community. The essential program provides individualized services across various areas, including education, medical and mental healthcare, family engagement, all tailored to meet the unique needs of each child and family.

Being a grant-funded initiative, Head Start relies heavily on the support of volunteers from the community to help bolster their funding and service capabilities.

The event brought smiles not only to the kids but also to the volunteers, who found the experience equally rewarding. The success of the initiative has led to discussions about continuing the reading program throughout the year, as the positive impact on both the children and Team DCK was quite evident. With community support, this effort aims to nurture a love for literacy and learning in young children for years to come.
