Portland Produce: Oh How the Garden Grows

Mr. S. Thompson, a Dismas client, takes great pride in the Dismas Charities Portland (DCP) garden. He was excited to have an opportunity to turn the dirt during his time with Portland and shared the following:

"I would like to thank everyone here at Dismas Charities for the opportunity to grow this garden. It truly has been a blessing to me, and all the residents here will benefit from eating the fresh produce as well. We are growing various types of tomatoes, jalapeno peppers, spicy and green bell peppers, chili peppers, sweet banana peppers, cucumbers, potatoes and many beautiful sunflowers. I grew up around my grandparent's farm in Science Hill, Kentucky where we raise beef cattle and cut and sold round bales of hay. Nearly all the food that we eat there is grown on the farm, very little comes from a grocery store, all the way down to grinding our own corn meal and flour from the different types of corn that we had grown. This also included a lot of canning and freezing for the winter months of the year. All the food we ate truly tasted amazing and has been unmatched anywhere else in my humble opinion. It brings me much joy to be able to work in this garden and share some of these great things with my current community..."
